Katswell Grange:
A Case Study in Residential Heat Pump Upgrade

Overview

Katswell Grange, a spacious family home in Monmouth, recently received a full heating system upgrade with the installation of a high-efficiency air source heat pump. This retrofit included underfloor heating, new radiators, and a large thermal store to deliver consistent comfort while significantly reducing energy use and carbon emissions.

Project Goals

Replace conventional heating with a low-carbon air source heat pump system

Improve overall heating efficiency and home comfort

Provide reliable hot water storage tailored for family needs

Minimise noise impact with a carefully planned equipment layout

System Upgrades

A German-engineered Stiebel Eltron WPL 25 ACS inverter-driven heat pump was installed, delivering 13 kW nominal output with a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 3.44. New underfloor heating was installed on the ground floor, complemented by nine additional larger radiators upstairs to maximise heat distribution at lower flow temperatures.

A 300-litre stainless steel heat pump cylinder provides ample hot water storage, designed to meet the daily demands of a household of four. Noise assessment confirmed the system operates quietly within permitted limits, ensuring no disturbance to neighbours.

Funding & Rationale

The decision to retrofit was driven by the homeowner’s commitment to sustainability and long-term energy savings. This upgrade aligns with modern building standards and reduces reliance on fossil fuels, setting a benchmark for efficient residential heating in the region.

Results & Benefits

Reliable and even heating throughout 239m² of living space

Improved energy efficiency with a SCOP of 3.44

Significant reduction in household carbon footprint compared to traditional boilers

Comfortable, quieter heating system with modern controls

Future-proofed hot water storage and heating system for ongoing occupant comfort

Conclusion

The Katswell Grange project highlights how carefully designed heat pump systems can transform traditional homes into sustainable, energy-efficient living spaces. Combining smart equipment selection with expert installation ensures comfort, savings, and environmental responsibility for years to come.
